What to watch on TV tonight: Saturday

This is the telly everyone will be talking about tomorrow.

The Theory of Everything (RTÉ One, 9.20pm)

Tonight RTÉ air the moving biographical drama about Stephen Hawking’s life. A promising but unfocused physicist undertaking his PhD at Cambridge, Hawking meets literature student Jane Wilde and begin a romance that survives his diagnosis with motor neurone disease. The story of their life shows how his condition robbed him of his independence, but not his wit, warmth and intellect.

Strictly Come Dancing (BBC One, 7pm)

Tonight Strictly returns with Shirley Ballas replacing Len Goodman on the judges’ panel. This year features another rake of popular faces including JLS’s Aston Merrygold, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale star Gemma Atkinson and 2008 X Factor winner Alexandra Burke. No dancing yet unfortunately, as we’ll only be meeting the celebs and witnessing them meeting their professional partners.

X-Men: First Class (Channel 4, 9pm)

Set in the 1960s, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy play a young Magneto and Professor X, showing their friendship before they became sworn enemies. As the world teeters on the brink of nuclear war, they join forces to save humanity. However, it’s not long until something tears the friends apart.

Everybody’s talking about… The trailer for Netflix’s Margaret Atwood adaptation ‘Alias Grace’

The leading character, Grace Marks (played by Sarah Gadon) is an Irish immigrant. She’s played by a Canadian woman who drifts in and out of several different regional accents for the duration of the trailer. Aside from that it could have the potential to entertain fans of The Handmaid’s Tale.

x + y (BBC Two, 9pm) Movie about a socially awkward teenage maths prodigy gains new confidence and friendships after making it to the British International Maths Olympiad team.

9/11: The Plane that Hit the Pentagon (RTÉ2, 7.15pm) Documentary about the survivors and first responders of 9/11′s attack on the Pentagon.

Ride Along (Tv3, 9.15pm) Action comedy about a school security guard trying to prove to a hard-as-nails cop that he’s good enough to marry his sister.

The X Factor (Tv3, 8pm) Week two of the singing competition brings some more footage of the show’s audition process.

Celebrity Juice (3e, 10pm) Keith Lemon returns for another series of Celebrity Juice, tonight featuring Holly Willoughby, Fearne Cotton, Charli XCX and Love Island stars Chris and Kem.
